Israel has the most highly developed defense industry in the Middle East and the most advanced missile production capability outside of the Soviet Union, United States, France and China. It has exported missile systems and technical advice to several nations, most notably Taiwan and South Africa.
The United States sent Israel the Lance short-range (130 km/450 kg) SSM system in the mid-1970s to counter the build-up of missiles the Soviet Union provided to the Arab states. Israel has had indigenously produced cluster munition warheads for the Lance missiles for over a decade.
