The Bharat Earth Movers Limited was incorporated in May 1964 and commenced operations from January 1, 1965. BEML was included on the list of Indian entities that were subjected to US sanctions announced after the May 1998 nuclear tests.
BEML is a leader in the earth-moving industry with over 70 per cent market share. Its equipments and systems are productively deployed in India and over 30 other countries across the globe. The company has acquired ISO 9000 certificate. The production units of the company are located at Bangalore, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) and Mysore in Karnataka. A subsidiary unit, Vigyan Industries Limited (VIL) in Tarikere (Karnataka) has been established by taking over an existing venture of the state government. Its corporate office is at Bangalore.
The company is presently engaged in the design, development and manufacture of a wide range of sophisticated equipments and systems, particularly earth-moving machines, rail coaches, track-laying equipments, heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and diesel engines. The company is engaged in the production of rail coaches, rail bus and DC EMUs for Indian Railways, heavy duty trucks/its variants, crash fire tenders, heavy recovery vehicles, PMS bridges, earth moving equipment and aggregates for defence. Its other major customers in the country are Coal India Limited, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Associated Cement Company, the Steel Authority of India Limited, the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation and the National Thermal Power Corporation.
