U.S. Department of Energy and Washington State Department of Ecology have identified the need to maintain safe storage of high-level radioactive wastes currently stored in the older single-shell tanks, Watchlist Tank 241-SY-101 (commonly referred to as 101-SY), and future waste volumes associated with Tank Farm and other Hanford Facility operations, including a need to provide a modern, safe, reliable, and regulatory-compliant replacement cross-site transfer capability. The purpose of this action is to prevent uncontrolled releases to the environment by maintaining safe storage of tank wastes. This action would be an interim action pending other actions that could result from the Tank Waste Remediation System Environmental Impact Statement. This Final Environmental Impact Statement analyzes five alternatives for maintaining safe interim storage of Hanford tank wastes.
