On 27 November, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with Daniel Günther, Minister-President of Germany's federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, who is on a visit to Tallinn. The meeting focused on advancing bilateral cooperation in the fields of cyber and digital affairs, security, education and the maritime economy, supporting Ukraine, and strengthening security in Europe and the Baltic Sea region.
Schleswig-Holstein is the first German federal state to test Estonia's data exchange platform X-Road. "We hope this will become our shared success story and inspire other federal states to move forward with the digitalisation of public services. Estonia is always ready to share its experiences and lessons learned," Tsahkna affirmed.
The Minister highlighted examples of business cooperation, including Estonian companies Insta Globe Engineering and Skeleton Technologies. The former has a branch in Kiel providing digital solutions for shipbuilding and the maritime industry, while the latter is opening a new supercapacitor factory tomorrow near Leipzig. To further develop business relations, Estonia also recently opened a business hub at its embassy in Berlin.
Speaking about Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, Minister Tsahkna stressed that European countries' support for Ukraine must remain unwavering. "Ukraine fights every day for the whole of Europe, and it is our duty to help them in every way, contributing both to their defence capabilities and to reconstruction," Tsahkna said. He commended Minister-President Günther for Germany's significant contribution to strengthening Ukraine's defence capacity, highlighting Germany's active role in the Tallinn Mechanism and IT Coalition networks, which help to bolster Ukraine's cyber defence capabilities.
Foreign Minister Tsahkna also underlined the need to continue strengthening the European Union's security architecture. "In recent months, Russia has increasingly provoked EU member states with hybrid attacks - violating our airspace with fighter jets and drones, and endangering critical underwater infrastructure and marine environments in the Baltic Sea with the actions of its shadow fleet," Tsahkna noted. "We must continue to increase defence spending and develop mechanisms to counter hybrid threats. Germany is also an important target market and cooperation partner for Estonian defence industry companies," the Minister said.
