On 13 November, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna visited Berlin, where he met with, among others, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to discuss strengthening European security, continued support for Ukraine, and increasing pressure on Russia to end its war of aggression.
"Estonia and Germany share a very similar view of the challenges facing Europe and how to address them. Today's meeting provided an opportunity to discuss our next joint steps," said Tsahkna following the meeting.
"Europe must continue to act with determination — strengthening its own security, exerting pressure on the aggressor Russia, and supporting Ukraine in its fight for independence and sovereignty. Germany plays a key role in all of this," Tsahkna stated during his meeting with his German counterpart.
The foreign minister stressed the need to move swiftly on economic pressure against Russia — by adopting a strong 20th EU sanctions package, enabling the use of Russia's frozen assets for Ukraine's benefit, and deciding on the imposition of tariffs. He also emphasised the importance of continuing military, economic, and political support for Ukraine.
"By applying sufficient pressure on Russia and supporting Ukraine, it is possible to bring an end to the aggression and achieve a just and lasting peace," Tsahkna said, adding that it is also crucial to swiftly establish a special tribunal to hold those responsible for the crime of aggression to account.
The ministers also discussed EU enlargement, with Tsahkna underlining the need to advance Ukraine and Moldova's accession processes.
Speaking on the strengthening of NATO's deterrence and defence posture, Tsahkna commended Germany for its decision to significantly increase defence investments in the coming years, as well as for its contribution to securing the Alliance's eastern flank.
While in Berlin, Tsahkna also met with Armin Laschet, Chair of the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee, and committee members Roderich Kiesewetter, Knut Abraham, Stefan Keuter, and Johannes Schraps, as well as with Günter Sautter, the foreign policy adviser of the German Chancellor, and Niels Annen, State Secretary at the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
In addition, the foreign minister delivered remarks at a real estate seminar hosted at the Estonian Embassy and took part in a roundtable discussion on Estonia's digital experience with Estonian companies and German journalists.
This evening, Foreign Minister Tsahkna will officially open an Estonian Business Hub at the newly renovated Estonian Embassy in Berlin, together with Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche and Minister of State for Europe Gunther Krichbaum.
