MAC CHIEF REITERATES TAIWAN'S RESOLVE TO SEEK PEACE WITH CHINA
Taipei, Dec. 10 (CNA) Taiwan is resolute in its pursuit of peace with mainland China, Joseph Jaushieh Wu, chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council said Friday.
In a meeting with visiting US Representative Steve Chabot from Ohio, who is also the co-chairman of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus, Wu predicted that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will win a majority in Saturday's legislative elections and the government's special budget for arms purchases from the United States will then clear the new legislature controlled by the DPP.
Wu told Chabot that President Chen Shui-bian's plan to change the names of the country's overseas missions and state-run enterprises was meant to distinguish Taiwan from China rather than disrupt the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.
It is China which imposes on Taiwan its territorial claims and threatens to absorb Taiwan with force, posing a risk to the status quo across the Strait, Wu said.
Chabot arrived in Taiwan Thursday night for a private visit and met with President Chen, Vice President Annette Lu, and Legislative Yuan President Wang Jin-pyng earlier Friday. He will leave Taiwan Saturday to continue his tour of Southeast Asia.
