PEACE WILL ENABLE DEVELOPMENT OF CROSS-STRAIT TIES: VICE PRESIDENT
Taipei, May 24 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu said Monday that the premise for the development of cross-Taiwan Strait relations is peace, without which there will be no progress or prosperity.
The vice president made the remarks when she received a delegation of the U.S.-based Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), which returned to Taiwan to attend the May 20 inauguration of President Chen Shui-bian for another four-year term.
Asked about the ethnic divisions after the presidential election, Lu said that those who did not vote for the Chen-Lu ticket are also Taiwanese and that it is crucial to adopt a pragmatic approach to gain their support.
She also expressed the hope that the pro-independence group can promote Taiwan's diplomatic work in North and South America.
She said that mainland China has learned from Taiwan's previous Kuomintang administration and is doing even better now because it is willing to spend more money to buy off the Republic of China's allies.
She expressed hope that FAPA will improve its relations with both the Republican and Democratic Parties in the United States so that both the ruling and the opposition parties there will gain a better understanding of Taiwan and render more support.
