INTERIOR MINISTER INSISTS ON ROC SOVEREIGNTY OVER SPRATLY ISLANDS
Taipei, April 1 (CNA) Minister of the Interior Yu Cheng-hsien reiterated Thursday the Republic of China's sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and said that his ministry is willing to help the Foreign Ministry handle disputes surrounding the coral reef island group in the South China Sea.
Claiming that the Spratly Islands are part of the ROC's traditional territory, regardless of whether the issue is judged from the historic, geographic or international law viewpoints, Yu said that the Ministry of Interior (MOI) will help the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) resolve disputes arising from the island group.
Yu said that the MOFA is fully in charge of such matters but added that the MOI is ready to give a helping hand at any time.
His remarks came after Vietnam issued a warning a day earlier that Taiwan's construction of a house raised on stilts on one of the islands infringes upon Vietnam's territorial sovereignty and damages peace and stability in the region.
The disputed Spratly Islands are claimed by Taiwan, mainland China, the Philippines and Malaysia, in addition to Vietnam.
