PRESIDENT PROMISES TO DEVELOP TIES WITH BEIJING WITH PARITY
Taipei, March 11 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian promised to develop ties with Beijing on the basis of parity in his weekly online newspaper.
Chen said that the people of Taiwan have never stopped pursuing peace and security, citing as an example the country's admittance to the World Trade Organization in 2002 after being rejected 12 years in a row.
However, the president said Taiwan won't be secure until Beijing denounces the use of force as a resort in settling its dispute with Taiwan. Therefore, the president vowed to develop ties with Beijing in the fields of economy, commerce and politics on the basis of parity.
He said the people of Taiwan have showed the world their strong desire for freedom, security and peace on Feb. 28 when more than a million Taiwanese formed a 500-kilometer human chain along the length of Taiwan.
He urged his countrymen to translate their passion for their country into a loud "yes" votes in the March 20 referendum.
