BEIJING'S MISSILE THREAT JUSTIFIES REFERENDUM: MILITARY EXPERTS
Taipei, Jan. 17 (CNA) Two military experts said Saturday that the mainland Chinese missile threat justifies President Chen Shui-bian's call for a referendum under the newly-enacted Referendum Law.
In a seminar on national security, Su Chin-chiang, a former National Security Council adviser, said the some 500 deployed mainland missiles aimed at Taiwan constitute an immediate and obvious risk to the country under which the Referendum Law authorizes the president to hold a referendum.
Former Deputy Minister of National Defense Chen Pi-chao echoed Su's opinion at the seminar, saying that the deployed mainland missiles, with an accuracy of being able to land within 50 meters of their targets, could destroy Taiwan's command and control system in a first strike. He said that this of course represents an immediate and obvious danger to the island.
