US SUPPORTS TAIWAN'S DEMOCRACY: U.S. OFFICIAL
New York, Jan. 14 (CNA) The United States confirms and supports Taiwan's democratic development, which is flourishing and has cemented ties with the United States, Deputy State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said here Wednesday.
Speaking to foreign correspondents, Ereli said President George W. Bush has made clear his commitment to Taiwan's security and will not compromise on it.
However, Ereli said, dialogue across the Taiwan Strait is the way to ease the tension between Taiwan and mainland China, and Washington takes seriously the promises made by President Chen Shui-bian in his inaugural speech.
As for the referendum called by Chen, the Taipei authorities have yet to reveal its contents and therefore it is impossible to say whether it has been misunderstood or not, Ereli noted.
Communication between Taipei and Washington is not a problem and there are plenty of channels for exchanging views, Ereli added.
