TAIWAN TO SEND 'REFERENDUM MISSIONS' TO U.S., JAPAN AND EUROPE
Taipei, Dec. 3 (CNA) Taiwan will send missions to the United States, Japan and Europe in mid-January to talk about President Chen Shui-bian's "defensive referendum" with government and opinion leaders.
A mission member said Saturday that their main purpose is to stress that the "defensive referendum, " a proposal to be held in tandem with the presidential election on March 20, is not to change the status quo of Taiwan.
He said the mission to the U.S. will be led by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kau Ying-mao. Members of the mission will include Joseph Jaushieh Wu, deputy secretary-general of the Presidential Office, and Lai Yi-chung, a department chief of Taiwan Thinktank. The mission to Europe will be led by Legislator Parris H. Chang.
