Russian Navy and Myanmar Navy launch MARUMEX 2025 exercise

A ship detachment of the Pacific Fleet as part of the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, the corvette Gremyashchiy, and tanker Boris Butoma left the territorial waters of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar for the Andaman Sea to participate in the maritime phase of the MARUMEX 2025 exercise.

The opening ceremony took place at the port of Thilawa. Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Lieutenant General Aleksey Kiyashko welcomed the participants of the exercise and wished them successful work at sea.

After the opening ceremony, the participants took part in planning and agreeing on joint practical actions at sea. The crews of both countries also held friendly games in football, volleyball, and basketball. Moreover, they organised a mutual visit to the ships participating in the exercise.

In the next two days, the crews of the Russian Navy and the Myanmar Navy are to practise command and control of the forces during joint manoeuvring, search, detection, and surveillance of submarines of the mock enemy as well as during combat exercises with artillery and torpedoes. Counter-terrorism groups of both countries will take part in inspection operations and practise the liberation of a ship captured by the pirates.

The Myanmar Navy is represented on the drills by the Muttama landing helicopter dock, the frigate Kyansittha, the corvette Tabinshwehti, and the submarine Tabinshwehti.

The main purpose of the exercise is to comprehensively develop and strengthen naval cooperation as well as to train in ensuring the safety of civilian navigation and maritime economic activities in the maritime areas of South-East Asia.
