Rodionov--New ICBM to be Deployed This Year
7 Feb 1997 Moscow Interfax
MOSCOW, Feb 7 (Interfax) -- Russian Defense Minister Igor Rodionov hopes that the Russian strategic rocket force will deploy the Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missile in 1997. "We are doing our best to see this program through and to have it on combat alert this year," he told a news conference in Moscow Friday in response to an Interfax question. The Topol-M has been undergoing flight tests for the last two years. All the launches have been a success, but its serial production has not started due to a shortage of funds. The Topol-M is an advanced version of the silo-based and mobile Topol intercontinental ballistic missile. It is 100% manufactured by Russian enterprises.
