ROK Ministry of Unification
2004-07-13

O The government reported on July 6 to the National Assembly its plan for providing 400,000 tons of rice assistance on a loan basis which was agreed during the 9th Round of Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation Promotion Committee held on June 5, 2004. It is now in consultation with the North on the wording of ¡°the Agreement on Loan-based Food Assistance¡± through exchange of documents.

- The South, considering the significance of the connection of inter-Korean overland routes, efficiency of overland transportation, and direct transportation to a food distribution center, proposed to send 20,000 tons of rice via overland routes to Gaesong and Kosong, North Korea, through its agreement sent to the North on July 7, 2004.

O The North, responding to the agreement, requested the South to send all 100,000 tons of rice via overland routes; 50,000 tons via an overland route to Gaesong, and another 50,000 tons via an overland route to Kosong.

- The South and the North, in principle, agreed to deliver 100,000 tons of South Korean rice via overland routes. Taking into account the route condition and capacity of cargo handling, they are now in consultation with each other on specific transportation plan,
