Exchange of People

<Visits to North Korea>

o During the month of June, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 166, a decrease of 1.2% from 168 in the previous month. It included 106 for economic exchanges, 12 for social and cultural exchanges, 5 for the LWR project, 34 for humanitarian aid and 9 for other purposes.

· The number increased by 36.0% from 122 in May 2003.

o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 3,198, an increase of 100% from 1,599 in the previous month. It included 1,803 for economic exchanges, 86 for social and cultural exchanges, 59 for the LWR project, 539 for humanitarian aid and 711 for other purposes.

· The number increased by 107.2% from 1,543 during the same period last year.

* The total number of Mt. Geumgang tourists during June was 19,002 in 30 trips altogether, an increase of 8.3% from 17,539 in previous month But Mt. Geumgang tour, which was suspended due to SARS, resumed on June 27-one tour involving 166 tourists.

<Visits to North Korea>

o The total of 204 North Koreans visited the South during the month of June on occasion of taking part the Fourth anniversary and international conference of the June 15 South-North Korea Declaration and atteding ASEM Iron Silk-Road Symposium

<Contacts with North Koreans>

o During the month of June, the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 183, an increase of 27.0% from 144 in the previous month. It included 38 for family reunion, 112 for economic exchanges, 23 for social and cultural exchanges, 5 for humanitarian aid and 5 for other purposes.

· The number increased by 72.6% from 106 during the same period last year.

o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 2,734, an increase of 39.8% from 667 in the previous month, It includes 28 for family reunion, 93 for economic exchanges, 997 for social and cultural exchanges and 12 for humanitarian aid and 1,604 for other purposes.

· The number increased by 3.317% from 80 during the same period last year.

Inter-Korean Trade

<Overview>

o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during June 2004 was $60.213 million in 263 items, showing a 31.1% decrease from $87.448 million in 260 items during the previous month and a 1.0% increase from $59.630 million in 230 items during the same month last year.

o Import from North Korea totalled $16.667 million in 79 items, a 3.5% decrease from $17.272 million in 74 items during the previous month and an 6.8% decrease from $17.890 million in 77 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $16.667 million.

·Commercial imports included $3.409 million of products in processing trade and $13.258 million of other commercial transactions.

·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $43.546 million in 216 items, a 37.9% decrease from $70.176 million in 217 items during the previous month and a 4.3% increase from $41.740 million in 176 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $6.518 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $37.028 million.

·Commercial exports included $5.050 million of raw materials for processing trade and $1.468 million of other commercial transactions.

·Non-commercial exports included $188 million of materials for the LWR project, $28.665 million of humanitarian aid, $6.147 million of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project and $2.028 million of materials for other cooperation projects.

·The composition of the exports was as follows :

<Processing Trade>

o The total volume of processing trade during June 2004 was $8.459 million, a increase by 8.7% from $7.783 million in the previous month, and a 5.9% increase from $7.989 million during the same month last year. This constituted 14.0% of the total inter-Korean trade or 36.5% of commercial trade during the month of June.

o The volume of import in processing trade was $3.409 million, a decrease by 13.5% from $3.940 million in the previous month, and a 25.5% increase from $2.717 million during the same month last year.

· The composition of the imports was as follows :
