<Visits to North Korea>

o During the month of March, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 88, an increase of 12.8% from 78 in the previous month. It included 49 for economic exchanges, 11 for social and cultural exchanges, 5 for the LWR project, 15 for humanitarian aid and 3 for family reunion. and 5 for other purposes.

· The number increased by 14.2% from 77 in March 2003.

o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 2,208, an increase of 246.6% from 637 in the previous month. It included 377 for economic exchanges, 806 for social and cultural exchanges, 91 for the LWR project, 94 for humanitarian aid, 794 for family reunion and 46 for other purposes.

· The number increased by 173.3% from 834 during the same period last year.

* The total number of Mt. Geumgang tourists during March was 16,382 in 31 trips altogether, an increase of 98.2% from 8,263 in previous month and an increase of 432.9% from 3,704 during the same period last year.

<Visits to North Korea>

o The total of 28 North Koreans visited the South during the month of March on the occasion of the 8th Round Meeting of Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation Promotion Committee.

<Contacts with North Koreans>

o During the month of March the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 165, an increase of 46.0% from 113 in the previous month. It included 28 for family reunion, 102 for economic exchanges, 24 for social and cultural exchanges, 4 for humanitarian aid and 7 for other purposes.

· The number increased by 16.1% from 142 during the same period last year.

o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 283, an increase of 99.2% from 142 in the previous month, It includes 8 for family reunion, 92 for economic exchanges, 116 for social and cultural exchanges and 28 for humanitarian aid and 39 for other purposes.

· The number increased by 174.7% from 103 during the same period last year.

Inter-Korean Trade

<Overview>

o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during March 2004 was $38.975 million in 230 items, showing a 38.5% increase from $28.141 million in 200 items during the previous month and a 1.0% decrease from $39.378 million in 214 items during the same month last year.

o Import from North Korea totalled $22.402 million in 72 items, a 21.5% increase from $18.440 million in 81 items during the previous month and an 8.4% increase from $20.666 million in 86 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $22.402 million.

·Commercial imports included $8.352 million of products in processing trade and $14.050 million of other commercial transactions.

·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $16.573 million in 182 items, a 70.8% increase from $9.701 million in 142 items during the previous month and a 11.4% decrease from $18.712 million in 151 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $5.146 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $11.427 million.

·Commercial exports included $3.754 million of raw materials for processing trade and $1.392 million of other commercial transactions.

·Non-commercial exports included $7,000 of materials for the LWR project, $8.094 million of humanitarian aid, $1.666 million of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project and $1.660 million of materials for other cooperation projects.

·The composition of the exports was as follows :

<Processing Trade>

o The total volume of processing trade during March 2004 was $12.107 million, an increase by 1.4% from $11.934 million in the previous month, and a 4.5% decrease from $12.682 million during the same month last year. This constituted 31.1% of the total inter-Korean trade or 44.0% of commercial trade during the month of March.

o The volume of import in processing trade was $8.352 million, an increase by 5.7% from $7.903 million in the previous month, and a 8.4% increase from $7.702 million during the same month last year.

· The composition of the imports was as follows :

o The volume of export in processing trade was $3.754 million, a decrease by 6.9% from $4.031 million in the previous month and a decrease by 24.6% from $4.980 million during the same month last year.
