<Visits to North Korea>
o During the month of October, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 108, an increase of 16.1% from 93 in the previous month. It included 48 for economic exchanges, 10 for social and cultural exchanges, 17 for tourism, 12 for the LWR project, 14 for humanitarian aid and 7 for other purpose
· The number increased by 8.0% from 100 in October 2002.
o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 1,743, a decrease of 24.3% from 2,303 in the previous month. It included 277 for economic exchanges, 296 for social and cultural exchanges, 818 for tourism and 155 for the LWR project, 91 for humanitarian aid and 106 for other purpose
· The number decreased by 20.4% from 2,190 during the same period last year.
* The total number of Mt. Gumgang tourists during October was 18,164 in 43 trips altogether, showing a 83.6% increase from 9,893 in previous month and a 48.0% increase from 12,270 during the same period last year.
<Visits to South Korea>
o 190 North Koreans visited the South in October to participate in the Korea Peace Festival. (The total number of visits to South Korea so far in 2003 is 997.)
<Contacts with North Koreans>
o During the month of October the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 153, a increase of 6.3% from 144 in the previous month. It included 35 for family reunion, 97 for economic exchanges, 16 for social and cultural exchanges, 3 for humanitarian aid and 2 for other purposes
· The number decreased by 12.6% from 175 during the same period last year.
o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 240, an increase of 18.2% from 203 in the previous month, It includes 35 for family reunion, 101 for economic exchanges, 95 for social and cultural exchanges and 9 for humanitarian.
· The number decreased by 36% from 375 during the same period last year.
Inter-Korean Trade
<Overview>
o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during October 2003 was $81.491 million in 227 items, showing a 17.6% decrease from $98.901 million in 194 items during the previous month and a 16.8% decrease from $97.944 million in 231 items during the same month last year.
o Import from North Korea totalled $41.903 million in 93 items, a 37.4% increase from $30.495 million in 73 items during the previous month and an 11.6% increase from $37.543 million in 80 items during the same month last year.
·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $41.885 million.
·Commercial imports included $23.435 million of products in processing trade and $18.450 million of other commercial transactions.
·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $39.588 million in 165 items, a 42.1% decrease from $68.406 million in 148 items during the previous month and a 34.5% decrease from $60.402 million in 183 items during the same month last year.
·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $5.527 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $34.061 million.
·Commercial exports included $4.219 million of raw materials for processing trade and $1.308 million of other commercial transactions.
·Non-commercial exports included $590,000 of materials for the LWR project, $30.713 million of humanitarian aid, $2.057 million of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project.

<Processing Trade>
o The total volume of processing trade during October 2003 was $27.653 million, a increase by 17.5% from $23.535 million in the previous month, and a 12.2% decrease from $31.496 million during the same month last year. This constituted 33.9% of the total inter-Korean trade or 58.3% of commercial trade during the month of October.
o The volume of import in processing trade was $23.435 million, a increase by 71.6% from $13.659 million in the previous month, and a 9.5% decrease from $25.894 million during the same month last year.
· The composition of the imports was as follows :
