<Visits to North Korea>

o During the month of September, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 93, a decrease of 9.7% from 103 in the previous month. It included 2 for family reunion, 39 for economic exchanges, 18 for social and cultural exchanges, 9 for tourism, 15 for the LWR project, 9 for humanitarian aid and 1 for other purpose

· The number increased by 21.2% from 85 in September 2002.

o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 2,303, an increase of 33.0% from 1,731 in the previous month. It included 754 for family reunion, 162 for economic exchanges, 369 for social and cultural exchanges, 466 for tourism and 159 for the LWR project, 198 for humanitarian aid and 195 for other purpose

· The number increased by 14.6% from 2,010 during the same period last year.

* The total number of Mt. Gumgang tourists during September was 9,893 in 25 trips altogether, showing a 24.9% increase from 7,921 in previous month and a 143.5% increase from 4,063 during the same period last year.

<Visits to South Korea>

o 40 North Koreans visited the South in September for the visit of the participants to the joint event on the occasion of the Foundation Day Of Korea. (The total number of visits to South Korea so far in 2003 is 807.)

<Contacts with North Koreans>

o During the month of September the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 144, a increase of 2.1% from 141 in the previous month. It included 30 for family reunion, 77 for economic exchanges, 27 for social and cultural exchanges, 5 for humanitarian aid and 4 for other purposes

· The number increased by 2.9% from 140 during the same period last year.

o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 203, an decrease of 52.2% from 425 in the previous month, It includes 43 for family reunion, 54 for economic exchanges, 95 for social and cultural exchanges and 11 for humanitarian.

· The number increased by 125.6% from 90 during the same period last year.

Inter-Korean Trade

<Overview>

o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during September 2003 was $98.901 million in 194 items, showing a 50.7% increase from $65.618 million in 222 items during the previous month and a 58.9% increase from $62.255 million in 198 items during the same month last year.

o Import from North Korea totalled $30.495 million in 73 items, a 14.5% increase from $26.626 million in 79 items during the previous month and an 35.4% increase from $22.526 million in 82 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $30.474 million.

·Commercial imports included $13.659 million of products in processing trade and $16.815 million of other commercial transactions.

·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $68.406 million in 148 items, a 75.4% increase from $38.992 million in 168 items during the previous month and a 72.2% increase from $39.729 million in 131 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $48.026 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $20.379 million.

·Commercial exports included $9.875 million of raw materials for processing trade and $38.151 million of other commercial transactions.

·Non-commercial exports included $188,000 of materials for the LWR project, $17.744 million of humanitarian aid, $2.199 million of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project.

·The composition of the exports was as follows :

<Processing Trade>

o The total volume of processing trade during September 2003 was $23.535 million, a increase by 8.0% from $21.788 million in the previous month, and a 12.3% increase from $20.948 million during the same month last year. This constituted 23.8% of the total inter-Korean trade or 30.0% of commercial trade during the month of September.

o The volume of import in processing trade was $13.659 million, a increase by 28.7% from $10.617 million in the previous month, and a 23.2% increase from $11.091 million during the same month last year.

· The composition of the imports was as follows :
