<Visits to North Korea>
o During the month of August, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 103, a decrease of 5.5% from 109 in the previous month. It included 40 for economic exchanges, 12 for social and cultural exchanges, 11 for tourism, 18 for the LWR project, 16 for humanitarian aid and 3 for other purpose
· The number increased by 110.2% from 49 in August 2002.
o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 1,731, an increase of 57.9% from 1,096 in the previous month. It included 16 for family reunion, 488 for economic exchanges, 150 for social and cultural exchanges, 127 for tourism and 211 for the LWR project, 345 for humanitarian aid and 434 for other purpose
· The number increased by 117.7% from 795 during the same period last year.
* The total number of Mt. Gumgang tourists during August was 7,921 in 16 trips altogether, showing a 48.3% increase from 5,343 in previous month and a 34.3% decrease from 12,064 during the same period last year.
<Contacts with North Koreans>
o During the month of August the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 141, a decrease of 0.7% from 142 in the previous month. It included 40 for family reunion, 69 for economic exchanges, 25 for social and cultural exchanges, 4 for humanitarian aid and 3 for other purposes
· The number decreased by 17.5% from 171 during the same period last year.
o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 425, an increase of 248.4% from 122 in the previous month, It includes 21 for family reunion, 43 for economic exchanges, 28 for social and cultural exchanges, 14 for humanitarian aid and 319 for other purpose.
· The number decreased by 36.4% from 668 during the same period last year.
Inter-Korean Trade
<Overview>
o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during August 2003 was $65.618 million in 222 items, showing a 8.9% decrease from $72.025 million in 228 items during the previous month and a 66.2% increase from $39.478 million in 221 items during the same month last year.
o Import from North Korea totalled $26.626 million in 79 items, a 18.9% increase from $22.393 million in 84 items during the previous month and an 65.7% increase from $16.070 million in 76 items during the same month last year.
·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $22.626 million.
·Commercial imports included $10.617 million of products in processing trade and $16.009 million of other commercial transactions.
·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $38.992 million in 168 items, a 21.4% decrease from $49.632 million in 172 items during the previous month and a 66.6% increase from $23.408 million in 174 items during the same month last year.
·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $11.579 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $27.414 million.
·Commercial exports included $11.171 million of raw materials for processing trade and $408,000 of other commercial transactions.
·Non-commercial exports included $654,000 of materials for the LWR project, $25.171 million of humanitarian aid, $929,000 of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project.

<Processing Trade>
o The total volume of processing trade during August 2003 was $21.788 million, a increase by 20.8% from $18.031 million in the previous month, and a 1.9% increase from $21.381 million during the same month last year. This constituted 33.2% of the total inter-Korean trade or 57.0% of commercial trade during the month of August.
o The volume of import in processing trade was $10.617 million, a increase by 54.2% from $6.884 million in the previous month, and a 19.2% increase from $8.910 million during the same month last year.
