Inter-Korean Family Reunions Due Late Sept.

2003-09-04

South Korea's Red Cross said on Wednesday (Sept. 3) that it has located the South Korean relatives of 187 North Koreans eligible for family reunions scheduled later this month.

The names and other information about the South Korean relatives will be forwarded to North Korea on Thursday for the reunions scheduled at Mt. Geumgang, a scenic North Korean resort, on September 20-25, said Red Cross officials.

North Korea will also give South Korea the results of its search during a meeting at the border village of Panmunjeom on Thursday, they said.

The upcoming reunions will be for only 100 from each side but the Koreas earlier exchanged the names of 200 each to increase the chances of locating eligible candidates.

South Korea will choose its final candidates by computer lottery, giving priority to the elderly and those with immediate relatives in the North.

The upcoming reunions will be the eighth in a series since the historic inter-Korean summit in 2000 that touched off a wave of reconciliation projects between the divided Korean states.
