Hyundai Pledges to Continue S-N Projects

2003-08-05

Hyundai Group said on Monday (Aug. 4) that despite the sudden death of the group’s leader, it will push ahead with its inter-Korean economic cooperation projects.

“Hyundai executives and employees are filled with deep sadness about the death of Chung Mong-hun, chairman of Hyundai Asan Corp.,” said Kang Myung-gu, president of Hyundai Elevator, in a statement.

“But Hyundai will honor the will of the deceased and sincerely press ahead with its inter-Korean economic projects.”

Hyundai Asan has led the inter-Korean economic cooperation effort. Currently, it is in charge of a sightseeing tour to Mt. Geumgang, a scenic mountain in North Korea. After a two-month hiatus, Hyundai Asan plans to start overland trips to the mountain in September.

In June, Hyundai broke ground for a large industrial park at Gaeseong, a North Korean city near the Demilitarized Zone that bisects the Korean Peninsula.

Kang said Chung felt sorry for causing trouble to the nation due to an alleged secret cash transfer to North Korea shortly before the inter-Korean summit on June 15, 2000.

“Chung also felt responsible for the controversy and often expressed his regret to foreign and domestic figures who helped Hyundai’s inter-Korean economic projects,” Kang said.
