<Visits to North Korea>

o During the month of June, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 122, an increase of 154.2% from 48 in the previous month. It included 2 for family reunion, 45 for economic exchanges, 8 for social and cultural exchanges, 8 for tourism, 19 for the LWR project, 39 for humanitarian aid and 1 for other purpose

· The number increased by 93.7% from 63 in June 2002.

o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 1,543, an increase of 267.4% from 420 in the previous month. It included 752 for family reunion, 359 for economic exchanges, 16 for social and cultural exchanges, 107 for tourism and 194 for the LWR project and 115 for humanitarian aid

· The number increased by 25.8% from 1,227 during the same period last year.

* The tours to Mt. Geumgang, which were temporarily halted due to SARS since April 26, resumed on June 27¡ªone tour involving 166 tourists took place since then.

<Contacts with North Koreans>

o During the month of June the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 106, a decrease of 23.6% from 131 in the previous month. It included 15 for family reunion, 62 for economic exchanges, 21 for social and cultural exchanges, 7 for humanitarian aid and 1 for other purposes

· The number increased by 21.8% from 87 during the same period last year.

o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 80, a decrease of 11.1% from 90 in the previous month, It includes 25 for family reunion, 37 for economic exchanges, 10 for social and cultural exchanges and 8 for humanitarian aid.

· The number decreased by 40.3% from 134 during the same period last year.

Inter-Korean Trade

<Overview>

o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during June 2003 was $59.655 million in 231 items, showing a 40.6% increase from $42.415 million in 171 items during the previous month and a 108.1% increase from $28.668 million in 203 items during the same month last year.

o Import from North Korea totalled $17.929 million in 78 items, a 1.3% decrease from $18.174 million in 77 items during the previous month and an 16.1% increase from $15.445 million in 85 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $17.907 million.

·Commercial imports included $2.717 million of products in processing trade and $15.190 million of other commercial transactions.

·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $41.726 million in 177 items, a 72.1% increase from $24.240 million in 119 items during the previous month and a 215.6% increase from $13.223 million in 144 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $5.610 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $36.116 million.

·Commercial exports included $5.202 million of raw materials for processing trade and $408,000 of other commercial transactions.

·Non-commercial exports included $2.722 million of materials for the LWR project, $31.949 million of humanitarian aid, $1.072 million of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project.

·The composition of the exports was as follows :

<Processing Trade>

o The total volume of processing trade during June 2003 was $7.919 million, a increase by 1.9% from $7.768 million in the previous month, and a 6.5% decrease from $8.466 million during the same month last year. This constituted 13.3% of the total inter-Korean trade or 33.6% of commercial trade during the month of June.

o The volume of import in processing trade was $2.717 million, a decrease by 44.2% from $4.874 million in the previous month, and a 26.9% decrease from $3.720 million during the same month last year.

· The composition of the imports was as follows :
