Gov't Expresses Regret Over NK's Threat

2003-05-29

The government on Tuesday (May 27) expressed regret over North Korea's repeated threat that South Korea will face disaster if it takes further steps against the reclusive nation.

“North Korea must be aware such provocative remarks are not conducive to making progress in inter-Korean relations and run counter to the spirit of the June 15 inter-Korean Joint Declaration,” the Unification Ministry said in a statement.

A ministry spokesman noted, however, that the government will continue efforts to improve inter-Korean ties based on mutual respect, principle and trust.

In last week's economic talks in Pyongyang, the North warned of an “unimaginable disaster” if South Korea takes steps against it.

President Roh Moo-hyun and U.S. President George W. Bush agreed in their summit meeting earlier this month that they will take further steps in the case of increased threats from the North.
