Exchange of People
<Visits to North Korea>
o During the month of May, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 48, an increase of 42.2% from 83 in the previous month. It included 25 for economic exchanges and 23 for the LWR project
· The number decreased by 50.5% from 97 in May 2002.
o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 420, a decrease of 15.5% from 497 in the previous month. It included 140 for economic exchanges and 280 for the LWR project
· The number decreased by 65.4% from 1,213 during the same period last year.
* The Mt. Geumgang tour has been suspended since April 25 due to SARS.
<Contacts with North Koreans>
o During the month of May the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 131, a decrease of 3.0% from 135 in the previous month. It included 45 for family reunion, 66 for economic exchanges, 17 for social and cultural exchanges, 1 for tourism and 2 for other purposes
· The number increased by 4.8% from 125 during the same period last year.
o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 90, a decrease of 33.3% from 135 in the previous month, It includes 34 for family reunion, 32 for economic exchanges, 17 for social and cultural exchanges and 7 for humanitarian aid.
· The number increased by 2.3% from 88 during the same period last year.
Inter-Korean Trade
<Overview>
o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during April 2003 was $37,985 million in 244 items, showing a 3.7% decrease from $39,431 million in 213 items during the previous month and a 9.5% decrease from $41,971 million in 214 items during the same month last year.
o Import from North Korea totalled $18,012 million in 83 items, a 13.0% decrease from $20,711 million in 87 items during the previous month and a 27.8% increase from $14,095 million in 89 items during the same month last year.
·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $18,011 million.
·Commercial imports included $7,035 million of products in processing trade and $10,976 million of other commercial transactions.
·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $19,973 million in 195 items, a 6.7% increase from $18,721 million in 150 items during the previous month and a 28.4% decrease from $27,876 million in 151 items during the same month last year.
·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $4,150 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $15,823 million.
·Commercial exports included $3,495 million of raw materials for processing trade and $655,000 of other commercial transactions.
·Non-commercial exports included $3,243 million of materials for the LWR project, $12,129 million of humanitarian aid, $340,000 of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project and $111,000 of materials for other cooperation projects.

<Processing Trade>
o The total volume of processing trade during april 2003 was $10,531 million, a decrease by 16.8% from $12,654 million in the previous month, and a 23.4% increase from $8,536 million during the same month last year. This constituted 27.7% of the total inter-Korean trade or 47.5% of commercial trade during the month of april.
o The volume of import in processing trade was $7,035 million, a decrease by 7.0% from $7,562 million in the previous month, and a 32.1% increase from $5,324 million during the same month last year.
