S-N Joint May Day Event Planned in P'yang

2003-03-18

South and North Korean labor unions on Monday (March 17) agreed to jointly hold a “May Day” event in Pyongyang on May 1, after a meeting in Pyongyang to discuss ways to build up inter-Korean labor exchanges.

Representatives from two South Korean labor umbrella groups, Korea Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and Federation of Korean Trade Unions said they reached a consensus with their North Korean counterpart on such issues as a joint rally on May 1 and a 6.15 kilometer marathon race.

They will soon organize a soccer match for workers from the two Koreas.

The representatives agreed to enhance cooperative efforts and continuous working-level contacts. They also declared the reunification should be accomplished in an independent, peaceful and agreed way.

The 27-member delegation to the North, led by KCTU Chairman Lee Nam-sun and FKTU Chairman Yoo Duk-sang, met with General Federation Trade Unions of (North) Korea head Ryom Sun-gil and attended a rally during their stay, returning from the five-day trip on Saturday
