Koreas to Start Relinking Railways in March

2003-03-13

Working-level officials from South and North Korea agreed Wednesday to start reconnecting two sets of railways late this month from the military demarcation line inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ), the Ministry of Unification said.

Under the accord after three-day talks in the North Korean city of Gaesong, the North will provide monthly notifications of its use of equipment and materials that the South has provided to the North.

In addition, nine technical staff from the South will visit the North later this month via temporary roads in the eastern part of the DMZ, one near the Gyeongui railway and the other near the Donghae railway.

The nine will work on the Gyeongui line from March 20-22 and make similar preparations for the Donghae Line during the March 24-26 period.

The two sides will hold further negotiations on a protocol concerning the operation of trains, the ministry said.

A South Korean delegation entered North Korea Monday via the temporary road through the west sector of the DMZ for the working-level talks.

The South's main delegate to the negotiations was Cho Myoung-gyon, chief of the ministry's exchange and cooperation bureau.
