S-N Talks Due for Reconnection of Railways
2003-03-10
A South Korean delegation went to North Korea on Monday (March 10) via a temporary road running through the western part of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) for working-level talks with North Korean officials to complete re-linking two sets of inter-Korean railways and their adjacent roads in the DMZ.
The delegation, led by Cho Myung-gyon, chief of the exchange and cooperation bureau at the Unification Ministry, will meet with a North Korean delegation at Gaeseong, located just north of the truce village of Panmunjeom.
At the talks, the two sides will discuss the South Korean support, in equipment and materials, required for the projects to reconnect the Gyeongui railway in the east and the Donghae railway in the west, which were severed during the 1950-1953 Korean War.
The two sides completed clearing landmines in the areas in December as a preparatory step to reconnecting the railways
