<Visits to North Korea>
o During the month of March, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 77, an increase of 20.3% from 64 in the previous month. It included 20 for economic exchanges, 14 for social and cultural exchanges, 13 for tourism, 11 for the LWR project, 15 for humanitarian aid and 4 for other purposes
· The number increased by 51.0% from 51 in March 2002.
o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 834, a decrease of 49.4% from 1,649 in the previous month. It included 150 for economic exchanges, 87 for social and cultural exchanges, 68 for tourism, 303 for the LWR project, 195 for humanitarian aid and 31 for other purposes
· The number increased by 61.0% from 518 during the same period last year.
* The total number of Mt. Geumgang tourists during March was 3,074 in 9 trips altogether, showing a 19.5% increase from 2,573 in the previous month and a 3.5% increase from 2,971 during the same period last year.
<Visits to South Korea>
o 105 North Koreans visited the South in March on occasion of March 1st Memorial Day Conference for Peace and Unification. (The total number of visits to South Korea so far in 2003 is 161.)
<Contacts with North Koreans>
o During the month of March the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 142, an increase of 22.4% from 116 in the previous month. It included 47 for family reunion, 64 for economic exchanges, 21 for social and cultural exchanges, 7 for humanitarian aid and 3 for other purposes
· The number increased by 20.3% from 118 during the same period last year.
o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 103, a decrease of 20.2% from 129 in the previous month, It includes 45 for family reunion, 21 for economic exchanges, 11 for social and cultural exchanges and 26 for humanitarian aid.
· The number increased by 18.4% from 87 during the same period last year.
Inter-Korean Trade
<Overview>
o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during march 2003 was $39.431 million in 213 items, showing a 4.6% decrease from $41.351 million in 221 items during the previous month and a 23.7% increase from $31.881 million in 215 items during the same month last year.
o Import from North Korea totalled $20.711 million in 87 items, a 36.5% increase from $15.176 million in 81 items during the previous month and a 35.3% increase from $15.303 million in 87 items during the same month last year.
·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $20.710 million.
·Commercial imports included $7.562 million of products in processing trade and $13.148 million of other commercial transactions.
·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $18.721 million in 150 items, a 28.5% increase from $26.176 million in 165 items during the previous month and a 12.9% increase from $16.579 million in 155 items during the same month last year.
·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $5.903 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $12.817 million.
·Commercial exports included $5.092 million of raw materials for processing trade and $811,000 of other commercial transactions.
·Non-commercial exports included $2.475 million of materials for the LWR project, $9.654 million of humanitarian aid, $565,000 of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project and $123,000 of materials for other cooperation projects.

<Processing Trade>
o The total volume of processing trade during march 2003 was $12.654 million, a increase by 20.2% from $10.526 million in the previous month, and a 29.2% increase from $9.796 million during the same month last year. This constituted 32.1% of the total inter-Korean trade or 67.5% of commercial trade during the month of march.
o The volume of import in processing trade was $7.562 million, a increase by 19.0% from $6.355 million in the previous month, and a 10.0% increase from $6.875 million during the same month last year.
