Koreas to Hold Talks on Joint Festivities
2003-02-26
Religious leaders from South and North Korea will hold three-day talks from Tuesday at the North's Mt. Geumgang to work out details of celebrations to mark the 84th anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement against Japanese colonial rule, the Yonhap News Agency reported quoting the secretary-general of a South Korean religious association.
Byun Jin-heung at the (South) Korea Religious People's Association said its delegation will travel to the North Tuesday via an overland road in the eastern side of the demilitarized zone.
Earlier this month, the two sides reached an agreement to hold the festivities in Seoul.
The North has said it will send some 100 delegates, mostly religious leaders, to take part in the festivities.
During their stay in Seoul, the North Korean delegation is expected to attend religious events to be organized by South Korean religious groups.
Other events include an inter-Korean academic forum to discuss the “justification of Japan's aggression in Asia and playing down its atrocities before and during World War II.”
On March 1, 1919, Korean students and intellectuals across the country marched in a peaceful demonstration against Japanese colonial rule.
