Pres. Kim Proud of His Sunshine Policy
2003-02-13
President Kim Dae-jung said Thursday his "sunshine policy" of engaging North Korea had contributed to developing inter-Korean relations during his five-year term in office.
"Relations have developed considerably during the past five years," Kim noted in a lunch with 160 leading members of civic and social organizations.
Kim said the sunshine policy had helped the two Koreas defuse tension, develop economically, and bring change to the reclusive North.
"History will recognize the value of the sunshine policy," he said.
Kim described the opening of a temporary cross-border road for the Mt. Geumgang tourism project as "a more meaningful event than the fall of the Berlin Wall."
Kim's five-year presidency ends Feb. 25.
