ROK, US to Set Up Consultative Body on Nukes

2003-02-11

South Korea and the United States will set up an inter-governmental consultative body on the North Korean nuclear issue and establish a special civilian-government committee to promote the 50-year-old alliance between the two countries, an official at the presidential transition committee said on Monday (Feb. 10).

Yoon Young-kwan, chief of the transition team’s reunification, foreign affairs and security subcommittee, briefed President-elect Roh Moo-hyun on the outcome of his recent trip to the United States and Japan as a member of Roh’s special delegation headed by Rep. Chyung Dai-chul.

The delegation returned home Sunday after an eight-day trip aimed at coordinating policy with Washington and Tokyo to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and prearranging Roh’s visit to the U.S.

“U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney agreed in a meeting with Roh’s special envoy Chyung on the need to set up an intensive consultative body to discuss the crisis over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program,” Yoon said.

The new consultative body will mainly focus on the nuclear standoff, though other matters would also be discussed, Yoon added.

Seoul also proposed forming a special committee to seek closer ties between the two traditional allies, he said, adding that such a panel would be composed of scholars and opinion leaders as well as government officials
