<Visits to North Korea>

o During the month of February, the total number of applications for visits to North Korea was 64, an increase of 16.4% from 55 in the previous month. It included 4 for family reunion, 18 for economic exchanges, 6 for social and cultural exchanges, 15 for tourism, 12 for the LWR project, 8 for humanitarian aid and 1 for other purposes

· The number increased by 36.2% from 47 in February 2002.

o The total number of actual visits made during this period was 1,649, an increase of 177.1% from 595 in the previous month. It included 754 for family reunion, 74 for economic exchanges, 64 for social and cultural exchanges, 154 for tourism, 416 for the LWR project, 184 for humanitarian aid and 3 for other purposes

· The number increased by 89.8% from 869 during the same period last year

* The total number of Mt. Geumgang tourists during February was 2,573 in 9 trips altogether, showing a 33.6% increase from 1,926 in the previous month and a 121.8% increase from 1,160 during the same period last year.

<Visits to South Korea>

o 27 North Koreans visited the South in February on occasion of the forth meeting of Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation Promotion Committee. (The total number of visits to South Korea so far in 2003 is 56.)

<Contacts with North Koreans>

o During the month of February the total number of the applications for inter-Korean contact was 116, an increase of 24.7% from 93 in the previous month. It included 52 for family reunion, 39 for economic exchanges, 18 for social and cultural exchanges, 3 for humanitarian aid and 4 for other purposes

· The number increased by 58.9% from 73 during the same period last year.

o The total number of actual contacts made during this period was 129, an increase of 48.3% from 87 in the previous month, It includes 35 for family reunion, 15 for economic exchanges, 48 for social and cultural exchanges, 19 for humanitarian aid and 12 for other purpose.

· The number increased by 101.6% from 64 during the same period last year.

Inter-Korean Trade

<Overview>

o The total volume of inter-Korean trade during February 2003 was $41.351 million in 221 items, showing a 12.8% decrease from $47.397 million in 177 items during the previous month and a 43.9% increase from $28.737 million in 224 items during the same month last year.

o Import from North Korea totalled $15.176 million in 81 items, a 29.6% decrease from $21.544 million in 75 items during the previous month and a 4.9% decrease from $15.592 million in 75 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial imports were $15.176 million.

·Commercial imports included $6.355 million of products in processing trade and $8.821 million of other commercial transactions.

·The composition of the imports was as follows :

o Export to North Korea totalled $26.176 million in 165 items, a 1.2% decrease from $25.854 million in 126 items during the previous month and a 104.7% increase from $12.785 million in 162 items during the same month last year.

·Of this, the total amount of commercial exports was $5.716 million while non-commercial exports accounted for $20.460 million.

·Commercial exports included $4.171 million of raw materials for processing trade and $1.545 million of other commercial transactions.

·Non-commercial exports included $5.684 million of materials for the LWR project, $12.409 million of humanitarian aid, $1.561 million of materials for the Mt. Geumgang project and $806,000 of materials for other cooperation projects.

·The composition of the exports was as follows :

<Processing Trade>

o The total volume of processing trade during February 2003 was $10.526 million, a decrease by 13.3% from $12.138 million in the previous month, and a 1.3% increase from $10.387 million during the same month last year. This constituted 25.5% of the total inter-Korean trade or 50.5% of commercial trade during the month of February.

o The volume of import in processing trade was $6.355 million, a decrease by 24.8% from $8.449 million in the previous month, and a 6.3% decrease from $6.784 million during the same month last year.

· The composition of the imports was as follows :
