Denmark kicks out remaining Libyan diplomats
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Aug 9, IRNA -- The last two remaining Libyan diplomats based in Denmark have been declared persona non grata and have been given five days to leave the Scandinavian country, Foreign Minister Lene Espersen announced Tuesday.
Talking to the online site of the Danish daily Politiken, Espersen said, 'It should not have come as a surprise to them.'
In May, Denmark expelled one Libyan diplomat, but kept the other two, hoping they would sever ties with the regime of Libyan dictator Moammar Qadhafi and side with the western-backed opposition Transitional National Council (TNC).
Since this did not happen, they were asked to leave, Espersen added.
Denmark had formally recognized the TNC as the only legitimate representation of the Libyan rebels, positioning itself in line with fellow NATO members France, Spain, the UK and Germany.
