Minister: Israel Faces 'Unprecedented' Cyberattack over Gaza
04:52 19/11/2012 MOSCOW, November 19 (RIA Novosti) - Israel had to repel millions of cyberattacks on government websites since the start of its operation in Gaza, Lebanon’s Daily Star newspaper said citing an Israeli minister.
"This is an unprecedented attack," said Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz, who is also charged with overseeing internet security.
He added that Israel had "deflected 44 million cyber attacks on government websites."
"All the attacks were thwarted except for one, which targeted a specific website that was down for six or seven minutes," he went on.
The comment came a day after hacking group Anonymous said it was launching the OpIsrael campaign against Israeli websites in response to the Jewish state’s threats to cut all Gaza's telecommunication links. The group posted a list of more than 650 Israeli websites, which it says were defaced or hacked.
Steinitz did not mention Anonymous directly, but pointed out that the Israeli government had a backup plan for all "essential websites" should they be taken down.
