Sixth Contingent of Salvadoran Troops Heads to Iraq

11 February 2006

A sixth contingent of Salvadoran troops is headed to Iraq for humanitarian work.

Officials say the soldiers left a military base near San Salvador Friday. Salvadoran troops have helped build schools and medical clinics in addition to drinking water wells in Iraq.

El Salvador is the only Latin American country that still has a military presence in Iraq.

The latest deployment comes two weeks before Salvadoran President Elias Antonio Saca is due to visit Washington for talks with President Bush. The two leaders are expected to discuss issues that include the war on terrorism, promoting and defending democracy in the Western Hemisphere, and expanding free trade and economic growth.
