Investigation Finds Italian Officer's Death a 'Tragic Accident'

"This was a tragic accident and the coalition expresses its deepest sympathies to the Calipari family," said Brig. Gen. Peter Vangjel in a statement. Vangjel was appointed by Lt. Gen. John R. Vines on March 8 to investigate the accident. Vines commands Multinational Corps Iraq.
Vangjel completed his investigation, under the auspices of Army Regulation 15-6, on April 29. Vines concurred with Vangjel's recommendation that no disciplinary action be taken against any soldier.
The March 4 incident resulted in Calipari's death. Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena and a driver were wounded in the incident.
"The Italian military is making significant contributions every day to help secure the future of Iraq," said Army Gen. George W. Casey, commanding general of Multinational Force Iraq, "and we are proud to be serving beside them."
