| April 3, 2003 Release Number: 03-04-42 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARINE KILLED IN NEGLIGENT DISCHARGE Central Iraq - A Marine from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force's 1st Marine Division was killed Wednesday evening near Al Kut when his M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon discharged, firing one round into his chest. Apparently, the Marine had been sleeping with his weapon when it accidentally discharged. The specifics of the accident are under investigation. The Marine died honorably in the service of his country, in the struggle to liberate the oppressed Iraqi people. His name will not be released until next-of-kin have been notified. |
