Iraq: Attack In Baghdad Leads To Two Deaths

Baghdad, 26 June 2003 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. military officers say an Iraqi man and a U.S. soldier were killed when a convoy of vehicles was attacked in Baghdad today.

The U.S. military said one U.S. Marine was killed and two others were injured when their vehicle crashed as they drove to respond to the ambush.

U.S. military officials said that in the attack, an Iraqi electricity-company vehicle was hit with an explosive, killing one Iraqi man and injuring another. Three U.S. Marines were reported to be injured in the blast.

U.S. Army Captain Sean McWilliams said U.S. forces are not yet sure what type of explosive device was used in the attack, which occurred on the road leading to Baghdad International Airport.

"We know that it was an explosive device. We don't know what type. They [the wounded] are being treated right now, the best treatment we can provide them. I don't know the extent of the injuries," McWilliams said.

A U.S. Central Command statement said one Marine was killed and two others were injured when their light armored vehicle rolled over while they were driving to the scene of the ambush.
