Annan expected to announce choice of special envoy for Iraq on Tuesday

23 May – Secretary-General Kofi Annan is expected to announce his choice for the United Nations special envoy for Iraq at a press conference on Tuesday, a spokesman for Mr. Annan said today.

Earlier Friday, spokesman Fred Eckhard told the press that the Secretary-General was close to a decision on a Special Representative, which he would convey to the Security Council in a letter.

Later in the day, the spokesman announced that letters from the Secretary-General had been sent to the Presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly.
