Coalition Aircraft Respond To Iraqi Provocations
February 16, 2001 RELEASE NUMBER: 01-02-03
MacDill AFB, Fla. - In response to recent surface-to-air missile (SAM) and anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) fire against coalition forces that enforce United Nations Security Council Resolutions, Operation SOUTHERN WATCH aircraft struck Iraqi integrated air defense system sites at approximately 1215 Eastern Standard Time.
The sites were targeted to degrade Iraq's ability to threaten coalition aircraft enforcing United Nations mandates. Iraq recently increased AAA and SAM engagements of coalition aircraft, with more than 60 incidents since Jan. 1.
Coalition aircraft never target civilian populations or civilian infrastructure and go to painstaking lengths to avoid injury to civilians and damage to civilian facilities.
