Deputy FM urges Afghanistan to release water from Salma Dam for Mashhad

Tehran, IRNA -- Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi has emphasized the necessity of releasing water from the Salma Dam in Afghanistan to provide a portion of the drinking water for Mashhad, a city in northeastern Iran.
In a post on his X account late on Wednesday, Gharibabadi wrote, "Fazl Mohammad Haqqani, the acting head of the embassy of Afghanistan in Tehran, met with me. During this meeting, we discussed the follow-up on the understandings reached during the recent visit to Kabul and the issue of Helmand water rights."
He added, "I also particularly emphasized the necessity of releasing water from the Salma Dam to supply part of the drinking water for the holy city of Mashhad (which also hosts a significant number of Afghan nationals) through the Doosti Dam."
