IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Sept 11, IRNA -- Senior Iranian and Russian officials are to attend a ceremony marking the commissioning of Bushehr nuclear power plant on Monday.

The power plant in its initiial phae will run with 40 percent of its total capacity of 1,000 megawatts.

The operation will end 35 years of the Iranian nation’s waiting for the commissioning of the power plant and its connection to the nationwide power grid.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi, Vice-President and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoun Abbasi and two Russian officials, including Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko and head of Russia's Atomic Agency Sergei Kreinko, will attend the ceremony.

Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko arrived in Tehran on Sunday to hold meetings with Iranian officials and attend the opening ceremony Iran's first nuclear power plant in the southern port city of Bushehr on Monday.

He is also due to attend the 9th Iran-Russia Joint Commission.

After signing an agreement on cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, Shmatko and Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi will hold a joint news conference this evening.

Iran announced that it will hold a ceremony marking the start of operation of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, at the venue of the plant on September 12.

Iran signed a deal with Russia in 1995, according to which the plant was originally scheduled to be completed in 1999. However, the project was repeatedly delayed by the Russian side due to the intense pressure exerted on Moscow by the United States and its western allies. Russia finally completed construction of the plant last summer.

On October 26, Iran started injecting fuel into the core of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the initial phase of launching the nuclear reactor.

The second consignment of fuel for the power plant was delivered by Russia earlier this year.

The facility operates under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
