105 candidates register for June 17 presidential election

Some 105 candidates registered at the Interior Ministry on Tuesday as candidates for the upcoming presidential election slated for June 17.
The Interior Ministry has announced that prospective candidates will have five days to register for next month's poll.
The Interior Ministry is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to register potential candidates during the period.
The hopefuls included unknown people namely eight women, IRNA correspondent reported from the headquarters for registration at the Interior Ministry.
According to the Constitution, women, however, are barred from the standing.
Four clerics and some cultural figures, workers and clerks also registered for the poll.
The names of candidates deemed qualified to run is scheduled to be announced on May 25 and 26.
Campaigning begins on May 27 and continues until June 15.
In the 8th presidential election, held in June 2001, 67 people registered as candidates for the presidency.
There was no key personality from the two main political parties, the reformist and fundamentalist, to register for the poll to succeed President Khatami, according to IRNA correspondent.
It is expected that some political or social figures will refer to the Interior Ministry to register their names while some personalities will formally confirm their candidacy on Wednesday.
After the deadline of registration process for the upcoming poll, the Interior Ministry would refer the files of all registered candidates to the Guardian Council to approve or reject their qualification.
