MAJOR SHIPMENT OF RUSSIAN NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY SEIZED EN ROUTE TO IRAN ISRAEL LINE FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1998 Azerbaijan's customs authority confiscated a large shipment of Russian nuclear technology en route to Iran on March 22, YEDIOT AHARONOT reported. According to an Azerbaijani spokesperson, 22 tons of ballistic missile parts were seized at the border crossing between Azerbaijan and Iran. The spokesperson said that the customs police discovered the nature of the shipment because its radiation level was very high and the contents did not match its certificates. He added that Russia has begun investigating the matter and made several arrests of people in connection with the shipment. Russian authorities notified Israel that they have arrested several Tadjikistani citizens. Israel Radio, KOL YISRAEL, reported that Government officials are expected to discuss Russia's assistance to Iran's long-range missile program with United States Vice President Al Gore when he visits Israel next week. Government officials said that Israel is finding it difficult convincing the American government to impose sanctions on Russia in order to bring a stop to its aid to Iran.
