CHINA PLEDGES NOT TO SELL NUCLEAR REACTOR TO IRAN ISRAEL LINE MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 1997 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on Sunday with Chinese Deputy Minister Ly Lan Chin during a stopover at Beijing's airport on his way to Japan, HA'ARETZ reported. Netanyahu said, after the meeting, that China has pledged to terminate plans to sell a nuclear reactor to Iran. "Israel welcomed this announcement and views it as a very important message. I hope it will serve as a guiding light to other countries in their contact with Iran," the Prime Minister said. YEDIOT AHARONOT reported that Israel sent a message to Moscow via the Russian ambassador to Israel saying that Russian support of the Iranian military buildup is endangering Israel. Cabinet members considered freezing cooperation with Russia in several areas including the importation of natural gas during a meeting on Friday. The newspaper also reported that Russian scientists are currently assisting Iran in the development of an advanced missile system capable of delivering chemical, biological and nuclear war-heads. American officials expressed displeasure at Russian assistance to Iran. Russia has repeatedly ignored the United States' requests to terminate this aid. ISRAEL LINE
