North Korea Weekly (May 27-June 2)

Inside North Korea

Kim Jong Il inspected the Korea People's Army Unit 823 and instructed the unit to further strengthen its combat capacities on June 1. On the following day, Kim received and gave a banquet for a visiting delegation of the Far Eastern Military District of Russia headed by the District Commander Yuri Yakubov.

The Central Broadcasting Station propagandized on May 31 that "mass gymnastic shows and the Arirang art performances are being shown amidst great fanfare at the May 1st Stadium. During the past one month, the performances have drawn over one million spectators including the Korea People's Army servicemen, workers from all levels, young students and some seven hundred delegations and tour groups from fifty countries."

International Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station argued on May 31st that "it is known to the entire world that the history of the imperialist U.S. is one of invasion and thievery. Its aggression policy against Korea is where its invasive and larcenous nature is expressed in the most undiluted form."

The Central Broadcasting Station asserted on May 31st that "Japan is seeking to enact U.S. Armed Forces Support Law and Contingency Law (named tentatively). What it is truly seeking here is to lay a legal foundation for the waging of a joint war of invasion with the United States using Japan as its foothold."

A mud-slinging anti-South Korea propaganda organization Democratic National United Front Broadcasting reported on May 30th that "Although the authorities argue that the recent joint U.S.-ROK military training are intended to test their anti-terror readiness for the World Cup Games, it disrupts peace on the Korean peninsula and creates a sense of crisis during the World Cup."

The Chairman of the North Korean Red Cross Central Committee notified its South Korean counterpart through a Panmunjom telephone message that they would "release water from the Imnam and Onje parts of the Mt. Kumkang Power Station from June 3."
