North Korean leader Kim Jong-il visited the designated tourist zone near Mt. Kumgang, under development by South Korea's Hyundai-Asan corporation, on Sept. 30th, accompanied by notables including Asia-Pacific Peace Commission chairman Kim Yong-soon, deputy director of the Worker's Party Central Committee Pak Song-bong, KPA generals Hyun Chul-hae and Park Chae-kyung.

North Korean foreign minister Paek Namsoon signed a number of treaties with Italy (Sept. 27th) during his visit to the Mediterranean country, including the , the , and the . In addition, North Korea's Central Broadcasting announced on October 1st that Chief of the KPA Politburo and Deputy Marshal Cho Myung-rok will be in the US for a visit beginning October 9th.

South Korean island of Cheju became a venue for a series of talks between South and North Korea, including the First Defense Ministers Conference from 24th to the 26th of September and the Third Inter-Korean Minister Level Talks (Sept. 27 - 30). Another group of delegates also convened in Seoul for First Working Level Meeting on Economic Cooperation (Sept. 24 - 26). Representatives of all three meetings issued and adopted their respective joint announcements, while an official visiting group from South Korea were in Mt. Paektu for sightseeing around the Korea's highest mountain.

North Korea organized a joint conference of government leaders along with leaders of other political parties and social organizations on Sept. 29th, and announced on first of October that delegates at the conference reached a decision to dispatch a letter inviting heads political parties and other organizations in South Korea, along with select individuals to Pyongyang.
