To shed further light on the emerging Chinese missile threat, we have assembled a special photo essay for "Special Reports." These rarely-seen pictures, taken during the March 1996 missile crisis on the eve of of Taiwan's first democratic presidential election, show China's missile forces in operation. Images from the Taiwanese crisis include Chinese technicians checking the electronics inside the booster of a DF-15 SRBM, a DF-15 erected in its launch position on a launch table and a crew preparing to launch a DF-15 from inside their command vehicle.
The report also examines claims that China may soon deploy their DF-21 MRBM with a new radar-based terminal guidance system similar to that employed on the highly-accurate (and now defunct) U.S. Pershing II and includes a number of images the missile.
