![]() | Reliable | In what is considered al-Qaeda's first attack, a militant Islamic Yemeni group, whose leader was on al-Qaeda's ruling council, bombed a hotel used by U.S. Marines transiting to Somalia as part of Operation Restore Hope. No Marines were at the hotel when the bombs went off, but two tourists were killed. Sources differ as to whether the tourists were Austrian or Australian.1
![]() | Questionable | Open sources do not identify the Yemeni group; it is speculation that the Yemeni Jannubi group was involved. Witnesses identified the group as strong allied with al-Qaeda in the early 1990s.
